A bottle jack is a heavy-duty, piston-driven hydraulic lifting tool named for its distinct cylindrical shape resembling a bottle. It operates by pumping a manual handle to force hydraulic oil from a reservoir into a high-pressure cylinder, which pushes a solid steel piston upward to lift massive loads vertically with minimal user effort. Most models feature an adjustable threaded extension screw inside the main piston that can be wound out manually to close the gap between the jack and the load before hydraulic lifting begins. A simple release valve at the base allows users to safely and slowly lower the load by bleeding the hydraulic fluid back into the reservoir. These compact tools provide immense lifting power relative to their small footprint and are available in weight capacities ranging from light-duty 2-ton models for passenger cars up to industrial-grade 50-ton versions used for moving building foundations and heavy commercial machinery.
